Źródłem dzisiejszego rozumienia terminu ‘niesamowitość’ jest esej słynnego psychologa i filozofa Zygmunta Freuda, z roku 1919, pod tytułem Das Unheimliche (Niesamowite), a więc trudno się dziwić, że odniesienia do Freuda i jego definicji niesamowitości stanowią wątek przewodni pojawiający się w wielu artykułach wchodzących w skład niniejszego tomu. Większość artykułów napisana jest przez anglistów specjalizujących się w różnych aspektach kultury i literatury brytyjskiej i amerykańskiej, a także w zakresie języka angielskiego, co oczywiście uwidacznia się w tematyce artykułów, a także tym, że mniej więcej połowa z nich napisana jest języku angielskim. Cieszymy się, że udało nam się także zachęcić grupę polonistów i germanistów, z renomowanych polskich i zagranicznych ośrodków akademickich, do uczestniczenia w niniejszym przedsięwzięciu wydawniczym.

The origin of the modern understanding of the uncanny lies in the seminal essay by Sigmund Freud on the German equivalent of the uncanny, that is on das Unheimliche, so it is hardly surprising that references to Freud, and his definition of the uncanny, constitute a leitmotif that recurs in many articles. Most of the articles deal with various aspects of British and American literature and culture, or concern the English language. But we are very happy to have been able to include a number of contributions by scholars specialising in Polish and German culture, from reputed Polish and foreign academic centres, who look at the matter from the point of view of those, highly important, cultures and literatures.
